When you name call and belittle people for having a different opinion (or fact), you lose the argument. The name calling is a clear distraction from reality.

I sometimes let the first few insults bounce off of my thick skin but it’s pretty easy to tell when you are wasting your breath. Once you get them to calm down sometimes a civil discussion can be had, it is a rarity though.
