Australian here, so not completely au fait on the legality. Do they actually have to work? Can their unions step in and say "no pay, no work"?

They are working under the pledge that they will get full backpay when the government reopens. To miss would be to give up that income, possibly the position.

As a Canadian & retired former RN, I've been an occasional visitor to just below the Canadian/US border in Washington in the past years, but have also enjoyed many US vacations over decades. Even worked in La Jolla as a nurse for a year. Always have had positive interactions. 1/2

2/2 Spoke to a US Border officer last week re: shutdown, Expressed my empathy & wanting to do something to help, even though Canadian. He suggested calling Port Authority. Did today, spoke to a Supervisor. Next trip, will bring some packaged food for Blaine's Food Bank.
