To the extent that that is even true anymore, it is literally only true because y'all put a guy to our heads to make it so. Allow competition in first class mail and see what happens.

I'm not seeing how anyone's forcing us to use the U.S. Mail. What they are doing is subsidizing the postal service, but that's because the Constitution all but requires it.
-
It is illegal to set up a competing first class mail system. If you tried to do so, you would be jailed. That isn't constitutionally required, but is the method Congress has taken (that, and requiring any letter sent by courier to be at least six times more expensive) here.
-
They do, fortunately, allow private couriers (at the aforementioned 6X minimum rate), but there's little question that the Feds could choose to enforce the "urgency" requirement in the law and fine/jail those of us who use such services for insufficiently urgent letters.

Anyhow, I would assume the vast majority of Mr. Doggett's constituents cannot afford to send every bill/letter/invitation via FedEX/UPS/DHL. We have no reasonable meat-space alternative to the USPS for such things because men like Mr. Doggett have decreed it thus.

The USPS is a complete relic and serves as proof of how government doesn’t adapt to new technology. It’s time that taxpayers stop subsidizing this immense money pit. Need more proof? Most USPS mail...is actually JUNK mail. Think about that.
