Words are not enough, we need action. That's why I'm fighting to pass my Law Enforcement Training for Mental Health Crisis Response Act. Police officers are often the first responders called to address mental health crises. Without adequate training the results can be tragic.
In Edmond, OK, last year, Isaiah Lewis was killed while experiencing a mental health crisis. Police were called to respond. Despite being unarmed, Isaiah was tased then shot. His story is all too common in America. 1 in 4 people killed by police suffer from a mental illness.
Protesters nationwide are again highlighting the immediate need for reforms. There's no single solution that will end injustice in our country. We need a multi-faceted strategy to end systemic racism and violence. I'm fighting for a vote on my bill as a piece of that strategy.
What about supporting the demilitarization of the police force? What about supporting @justinamash bill to limit LEO immunity? Or introduce yourself a bill that would require the police to have an independent review board for police conduct?
What about doing anything to address THE SECOND MOST VIOLENT POLICE FORCE IN THE NATION???
Will you support the bill to end qualified immunity? You say there needs to be a multi-faceted strategy to end systemic racism and violence. Will you be on the front lines to raise minimum wage, strengthen voting rights, force accountability for "bad apples"?

What if instead you fought for mobile crisis services and other frameworks that DON'T involve police being the first responders to mental health events? Instead of training police to do something that's not their core mission, build other structures to address this need?
Please add in mandatory 3yr check ins for PTSD, racism tendencies and aggression markers. Every 3 yrs. They don’t pass, they don’t patrol. Has to be ongoing accountability.
End qualified immunity
This has been on the radar of the special needs community for years. Autism parents like myself worry that one of our kids could have a meltdown in a stressful situation and could be serious injured or worse. There are organizations that do this sort of thing. I can help there.
