Often called Black Wall Street, Greenwood was a national hub of culture and commerce for the African American community. The violence destroyed 35 city blocks. Estimated deaths are in the hundreds.
For decades, the Tulsa Race Massacre received little press and was omitted from history books. This year, the Tulsa Race Massacre was added as a permanent part of Oklahoma’s history curriculum.
It is our responsibility to bear witness and share stories like the Tulsa Race Massacre so that they are never lost to history.
