He was possibly the best defensive catcher in baseball history. Spewing a lot of distracting talk to batters.
I got to know Double as a young kid growing up in Chicago. My dad was friends with he & his wife Alberta & I spent memorable times with them in their Bronzeville home.

Double Duty hitchhiked to Chicago from Alabama at age 17 and played for the Illinois Giants for ≈ $3 a day. He earned his nickname in a double header in 1932 when he caught Satchel Page’s shutout and then pitched his own shutout the next game.

I was fortunate to get to know and learn from Andy when he sat on my Board at World Sport Chicago. He loved Chicago and was unapologetic about it. Thank you for all you’ve done for all of us.

CPS is not a business, it’s an education system. Unfortunately, in 1995, the Republican legislature changed the law so that Paul Vallas, who was unqualified to be a superintendent, could run our schools. Let’s stop treating our babies like commodities.

Amen. We owe so much more to Lily Grace, Rafi, Ja’lon and every young person in this city who deserves safe streets. Grateful for these families. We have an obligation to do what we know is right.
Better is possible. Better is required.

Spookiest question of all the mayoral forums I’ve attended so far: Do you believe in ghosts?

"If Chicago is going to truly sustain, we have to grow. I have a plan to grow to 3M people by 2030: that’s going to take us actually working with our business community & making sure there’s real symbiosis between our people and the corporations that will bring jobs to the city."

"The gang database hasn’t made us safer – it’s made people & communities, many of whom look like me, not be able to walk around this city or participate in a way that's fair & equitable. If we’re going to change this city, we’ve got to change the way we operate." -Kam Buckner

"We have a murder rate that’s way too high and a clearance rate that’s way too low. We’re spending $4M per cleared case in this city. We have to put money into the organizations doing the work on the ground." -Kam Buckner

Crime isn’t the disease. Crime is the symptom. The disease is lack of investment in true public safety.
If you treat the symptom without addressing the disease, you’ve done nothing.
It’s hard to believe that so many people are either unable or unwilling to understand this.
