Everett sounds a lot like my town of Fremont, OH. A bypass on US 20 took most of the traffic around town, but it's the home of Pres. Rutherford Hayes, and has lots of hidden gems.

I despise the "America is like X" construct, because it priorities the predominantly white, predominately blue collar experience as the "one, true America" I grew up in small town PA. It was white. It was racist. It was poor.

Fortunately, I was a transplant there, and thus had broader experiences. I grew up with people who, despite being 90 minutes from DC, had never been to the Smithsonian. Never been to any museum, for that matter.
