Why not tax soda as a non- food item so it’s very expensive to buy? That way you are not just punishing poor people. Everyone would have to pay more - only right since over half the adults in the US are overweight. Not just poor people. Use $$ for public health.

Taxing soda doesn't fix the problem, just like making cigarettes more expensive has not stopped smoking. Not allowing small quantity, expensive drinks (like 20oz sodas, bottled coffees, energy drinks, etc) WILL at least promote a better use of SNAP dollars.

Actually taxing cigarettes has cut down smoking dramatically especially by young people. We have the lowest smoking rate ever in NY right now, largely due to our high tobacco taxes.

I’d say education about the dangers of smoking has done far more than the price.

Education started with the Surgeon General’s report in 1964 and was intense for decades. Rates didn’t start dropping until the 90’s when taxes began to be imposed, as well as clean indoor air laws. Education tells people they should change but doesn’t help them do it.

As someone who was in school in the 80's and 90's I know where the real education push began it wasn't in the 60's and 70's. It was in the late 80's early 90's. Its also when smoking started to disappear from television, removing the 'cool' factor.

As my generation has come into adult hood we tend to be less likely to start smoking. I worked at a store selling cigarettes when the prices were jumping up and all it did was make people change brands or go out of state to buy. It didn't actually curb active smokers.

I don’t discount that education. It paved the way for the decrease in smoking. But the evidence is clear that the rates didn’t drop dramatically until the taxes and indoor bans. 35 yrs in public health, those policies are the success story for sure.

If you wanted people to escape the cycle of poverty, you wouldn't have voted to take health care away from millions. The ACA made a huge drop in bankruptcies, and helped people not to get locked out with pre-existing conditions. GOP wants to undo all of that. #ny19

You are continuing to willfully ignore the fact that most SNAP recipients are already employed. The problem is that these individuals are not paid a living wage. Perhaps we can begin by offering a proper salary to more industries before you make lives harder for the working poor.

trump has job openings at his businesses, but gets foreign workers. Why is that? Why doesn't he make his little red hats in the US? Why does the GOP let him make money off the presidency, and indeed, the RNC spends $$$ at Mar-a-Lago. Where are trump's taxes? #russia #ny19

Adding work requirements, but no requirements that those jobs pay a living wage, or offer healthcare, is just making a tough situation tougher, while the GOP is silent about the millions trump wastes golfing, and his cabinet spends on flights, etc. #ny19
