Today, his ashes were interred in the Washington National Cathedral, honoring Matt & recognizing the work needed to confront hate crimes. In 2009, Congress passed the Matt Shepard & James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act-an important step to expand hate crimes protection.

As a cosponsor of a resolution marking the 20th anniversary of Matthew’s death, I believe we must strengthen federal discrimination and hate crime protection. I thank the Matthew Shepard Foundation, @HRC, and others for their work towards this goal. #WontBeErased
