We are talking about the most fundamental of things we need to function in our society - literacy. If we want Americans to dream, we have to give them the skills so that they may imagine a future for themselves, so that they may get their shot at the American dream. 2/

If we are not providing education & literacy to every child in this country, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic background, then we are failing to honor the values of this country and to pass on the promise that was made and kept to so many of us here today. 3/

I stand in Congress today because of the promise our nation made and kept to my father and to me. It is a promise that needs to be made & kept to every young American. An investment in literacy is an investment in our future, an investment in a fair and equal America for all. 4/4
