That's an insult to flimsy.
The Republicans of today would be sitting at Nixon's impeachment saying, "none of this matters until we find out who let it slip that there are tapes." This isn't about who the whistle-blower is, but what he blew the whistle on, which is corroborated. What a flimsy defense.

They don’t mean it as a line of defense. It’s just a warning to other potential informants that the White House and the GOP, like any other criminal gang, is willing to endanger the life of anybody who tells Congress or law enforcement about their crimes.

The real point is that they do not need a defense. They are going to vote innocent no matter the evidence because they believe that their constituants will stay with them as long as they “own the libs”. I fear they are right.
