During my speech at this solemn event, I told the story of William Harvey Carney. Mr. Carney was born into slavery in Norfolk & later fought for the Union Army. Known as the first African-American winner of the Medal of Honor, Mr. Carney made his mark during an 1863 battle. (2/4)pic.twitter.com/TDIGzgo4UP
As the soldier holding the Union flag was killed, Mr. Carney ran to catch the falling flag, raised it high, and kept marching despite his own wounds. He made his way back to the Union side, never once dropping the flag. His actions were an inspiration to other soldiers. (3/4)pic.twitter.com/rkPJ10Y38S
It was a privilege to tell Mr. Carney’s story and highlight the bravery shown at Fort Monroe. (4/4)
