How can anyone pull themselves up by their bootstraps if they don’t even have a pair of boots? We hold those born into nothing ridiculously responsible for their material, social and spiritual success. We must do better.
I’m tired of hearing the “pull yourself up by the bootstraps” trope by my Republican colleagues in Congress b/c two-thirds of Americans who are born into poverty remain there during adulthood. The idea that pulling yourself up works for everyone is a myth & it’s very harmful.
