On the first day of the New Democratic majority, we passed legislation with bipartisan support to reopen the government and end the Trump shutdown. It included my legislative text to give back pay to federal employees, which is cosponsored by 50+ colleagues from both parties.

  4. ...But for some reason the NPS park rangers who staff a tourist attraction in the DC building housing the Trump International Hotel remain on the job. Who declared them essential while the other national parks are closed? This is very, very suspicious.

  5. America's national parks are shuttered by the Trump shutdown, closures which will hurt local economies and damage tourism. Worse, at least 3 people have died in national parks while rangers remain furloughed.

95% (!!!) of HUD is furloughed for shutdown. "Most of HUD’s routine enforcement activities have been suspended, including mandatory health and safety inspections of housing for low-income families, the elderly and people with disabilities"

  7. I represent more federal workers than any other Representative. What Trump said here is simply false. Hundreds of federal employees have called or written my office to oppose the shutdown. These people are suffering

  8. Trump's threat to shut down the government for "years" would inflict incalculable damage on the United States. Not just on the government and its employees -- on all of us. America's economy and its citizens would be devastated by such a catastrophe. This is madness.

  9. Senate Minority Leader just said that Donald Trump threatened to keep the government closed for "months or even years" during his Oval Office meeting with Democratic leaders.

  11. 800,000 rank-and-file federal employees are working without pay or furloughed by Trump’s shutdown, and Trump cancelled a raise for the entire federal workforce, but top Trump political appointees are getting big pay raises. Pence’s pay will “rise from $230,700 to $243,500.”

  12. I support 's bill to grant statehood to D.C. The Founders said "no taxation without representation" when they revolted against British rule, yet residents of our nation's capital still don't have full voting rights in the 21st century. We should end this injustice.

Don't count on a speedy tax return either. And closings on home mortgages could be delayed too, Here's a look at how the effects of the government shutdown are beginning to ripple through the economy. w/

  17. We passed the same bills which every Republican Senator supported last month. This legislation to end the shutdown had unanimous support in the Senate and bipartisan support last night in the House. The Constitution says Congress is a coequal branch, . Do your job.

  18. We passed bipartisan legislation last night to reopen the government, but Trump is threatening a veto. The pain from the government shutdown is spreading to private businesses and workers, particularly federal contractors, who are in a terrible situation:

We also undid the House GOP Holman Rule, used to attack feds, and passed a measure to end Trump’s 2019 pay freeze for the federal workforce. America’s civil servants keep us safe and keep our government running, and we will not allow them to be used as a punching bag any longer.
