Yes, she's a heroine of the Civil Rights movement. But she wasn't the first black woman to be arrested on a Montgomery, AL, bus for refusing to sit in the back. But she did look the part of the more respectable black woman that the movement could get behind.

Also in a slim book on San Francisco Bay Area history are the stories of two black women suing for discrimination privately owned SF cable car cos in the 1880s or so. Not only did they win monetary judgments, they won also the right for black people to ride cable cars.
