People are free to sign up and delete profiles if they want, just as you did. If people really are concerned with privacy, they would sign out for good and delete accounts. I would challenge you to find a company to mimic FB under rules you would like, it wouldn't go far.
Facebook gave 150+ companies access to personal user data—including the ability to read private messages.
