Our criminal laws disproportionately target people of color, as do our immigration laws. And our country routinely uses the ‘criminal’ label as a way of stripping people of their rights and humanity. This entrenches racism.
The true spirit of criminal justice reform is to embrace our common humanity and uplift the power of all people to change their lives and contribute to our communities. Cutting immigrants out of this vision is the height of hypocrisy.
The #NewWayForward Act upholds the best of our values. It restores fundamental principles of due process and compassion to an immigration system that is cruel and imbalanced. It helps keep families together, advances racial justice, and protects due process for all.
