And then President Trump appeared to cave to the Republican party, who probably rightly told him tariffs that hurt American's will likely hurt the parties prospects in the upcoming election. Weird plan, but hey, if it gets positive press coverage? Why not?

Its simple, tariffs are leverage, leverage is how you get what you want while negotiating a deal. Maybe you should read Trumps Art of the Deal.

The tariff threats are doing more to hurt US economic stability than to do anything “positive” with Mexico. Everything Mexico is doing they agreed to do before Trump’s idiotic threats. This is another Trump con job.
