This painting, called the Surrender of General Burgoyne, is in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol. British General John Burgoyne surrendered following the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga. This was a major turning point in the American Revolution.

Horario Gates, center, was the American commander at Saratoga. A fierce rival of George Washington, he tried to take over the army, and Gates’s men urged a military coup. Fortunately, Washington’s pro-federalist views prevailed, putting country before party or person.
