These brave men endeavored on this pursuit because of their love for America, their love for their family, their love for their fellow countrymen, and for their love of the ideals that Americans believe in.
Because of what was in their hearts – patriotism, love, honor – it allowed them to overcome the great emotions that must have been going through their minds. Our troops climbed those cliffs, and, in the end, they freed Europe.
Sadly, many of those men, did not return home. More than 400,000 U.S. soldiers died during World War II. More than 7,000 of those soldiers were from Wisconsin. We remember their great sacrifice.
