President Trump’s arbitrary deadline on Dreamers has arrived. The Supreme Court’s decision last week means that those seeking a DACA renewal will have a temporary reprieve from the threat of being ripped away from their families, their jobs, and the only home they’ve ever known.
However, Congress still must act quickly to pass legislation to provide permanent protection and finally get Dreamers out of perpetual limbo.
There are deals on the table with support across the aisle that protect Dreamers and make border security more effective, but the President has lobbied against them, stalling progress on a bipartisan compromise. The President created this mess — he needs to lead on addressing it.
