With control of House, Senate & White House, Republicans control whether the government shuts down or not. They can either work with Democrats, which they have completely refused to do, or they can proactively elect to let the shutdown proceed, which they are barreling toward.

Let me be clear: I do not support a shutdown. It would harm our military and the many federal employees who live and work in our community. It would weaken our economy, and it would hurt our nation’s veterans.

That’s why I remain ready, willing & eager to work w/ GOP to negotiate bipartisan agreement that would address many challenges facing our nation. But I couldn’t support another month-long funding patch that abdicates our responsibility to make hard choices/do real governing.

The truth is, all Democrats and many Republicans want a long-term funding agreement that eliminates the harmful sequester and adjusts budget caps for the military and domestic programs.

We support extending the children’s health insurance program and community health centers program, and we agree that we need more disaster relief funds for the Thomas Fire and other disasters. And we support protections for DREAMers.

But President Trump, Speaker Ryan, and Majority Leader McConnell have decided to go their own way, to shut down the government — the havoc it wreaks be damned. There is still time. We need to stop this shutdown and hammer out an agreement. I stand ready.
