Today, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the executive order that ended racial segregation in our armed forces. Sadly, today also marks one year since President Trump announced his discriminatory transgender troop ban.

It is clear that the fight to protect every American’s ability to serve openly, proudly, and free from discrimination in our military is far from over. Ableness and readiness should be the only standards that matter when it comes to who is allowed to serve in our armed forces.

In Congress I will continue to fight to ensure that every one who chooses to bravely put their life on the line for our freedom, no matter their race, gender, or sexual orientation, is met with the respect and honor they deserve.
