President Trump’s trade policies are having a negative impact on many businesses and jobs here in Ventura County. An Oxnard business owner recently informed me that the South Korean steel tariffs would cost his business $1.2 million by October.
Retaliatory tariffs are also hitting U.S. auto-parts manufacturers and our agricultural producers hard. The latest Chinese tariffs announced on lemons and avocados – two of Ventura County’s most important products – will further hurt growers and workers.
President Trump needs to end the escalating trade wars. The U.S. needs smart and strategic trade policies that benefit American workers, farmers, businesses, and consumers.
The administration must also consider the negative impact that tariffs can have on our political and economic interests, particularly when those tariffs are levied against our own allies, with whom we should have normalized trade relationships, not self-inflicted trade wars.
