President Bush also called them "people" and even "folks." The key word in Omar's remarks was "some," contrasted with "all" in the next part of the sentence. All Muslims are blamed for something that a (tiny) *some* did. She is right -- and President Bush warned against it too.
This needs to stop. @Ilhan is a dedicated public servant who bravely and faithfully represents her constituents despite near constant threats to her safety. Yes it needs to stop. She also needs to stop parsing her words so careful so as to calll insult to Americans who lost so much by international terrorism on 9/11. It wasn’t just someone doing something. Surely she said it that way for her own reasons.
