I have heard people say the same thing about doctors and hospitals. I am not quite sure how to think about that, If a for-profit prison can provide a good service and help reduce recidivism, what is the problem?

Studies have shown prisoners in for-profit prisons serve longer and have the same rate of recitivism as other prisons. With for-profit prisons being paid per occupied bed they have an incentive to keep them full. Which isn’t always in the best interest of the state (or taxpayers)

This is a prime example of a system that should not be privatized. For-profit corporations exist solely for the benefit and enrichment of its shareholders.
