This week the House is debating bills that will ensure we handle the opioid epidemic as the health crisis it is. For years we treated addiction as a criminal activity. Rather than treatment and intervention, the War on Drugs doled out prison sentences that many are still serving

We need to acknowledge that the War on Drugs didn’t just fail; it was a failure to stay true to the values of equality and fairness that we hold dear. All drug use, opioid, cocaine, and otherwise, should be treated as an addiction, not criminal behavior.
