I recently met with staff of the @stlzoo and learned about Missouri's amphibian populations. The Zoo's WildCare Institute has partnered with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) to help implement conservation action for the hellbender salamander.

Missouri is the home of the only two subspecies of the hellbender salamander, also known as the giant salamander. These amphibians have suffered a serious decline in numbers over the past three decades, making the hellbender the only endangered amphibian in Missouri.

Thanks to the work of the Ron Goellner Center for Hellbender Conservation, the St. Louis Zoo, and the MDC, the hellbender population has increased every year since 2011.
