Most SNAP recipients who can work do so. Among SNAP households with at least one working-age, non-disabled adult, more than 1/2 work while receiving SNAP. Many workers turn to SNAP between jobs; more than 80 percent work in the year before or after receiving SNAP.
Today, I joined 64 Members of Congress on a letter to Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue supporting a proposed rule that would restore integrity to SNAP, or the "food stamp" program, through work or training requirements for able-bodied adults without children. Most able-bodied people on SNAP are already working. If you really want to reduce the dependence on SNAP enforce a livable minimum wage be paid to all workers. Anything less just hurts the poor while subsidizing businesses.
