Currently, civil rights protections do not explicitly include sexual orientation or gender identity. This lack of explicit protection can lead to limited legal recourse for students who are discriminated against solely because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
The Student Non-Discrimination Act, modeled after the Title IX protections, would establish a federal prohibition of discrimination in public schools for students who are discriminated against based on actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity.
This legislation will allow LGBTQ students to learn in a more safe & welcoming environment, enabling them to thrive academically & socially.
