    Got asked an ID question on , so I reviewed the taxonomic illustrations of the species in question. I quickly redrew them & labeled the key distinguishing features to help with future IDs for non-taxonomists Adapted from Gary Poore (2004)

    As a trained scientist and a self-taught artist, the strongest commonalities I see between science and art are the ways they teach and enable us to understand the world around us. Drawing hard lines between the disciplines denies their overlap. Many great scientists were artists

    Do any other PhD students here with creative hobbies, projects and/or side businesses struggle to maintain this creativeness? My creative juices are exhausted since starting my PhD & I find it much more difficult to make art now, or even sketch for fun.

    "The Crow" 40-minute digital speedpaint following a prompt. It was a fun & challenging exercise trying to come up with a scene & paint it in a short time frame. I would like to more exercises like this in the future!

    Haven't been able to paint much since uni went back. I am often too tired to paint once I complete PhD committments for the day 😴 The top dorsal, body scales & tail are still in various stages. (Contrast/colours aren't as harsh in real life as they appear on screen)

    Getting the anatomy right took time. Lots of textbook diagrams, photos of kingfish (including dissections), feedback from various ichthyologists. While it may not be 100% accurate (+ artistic integrity), I'm proud of my first fish anatomy illustration!

    More digital goodness! This was an illustration I did for the PhD research of a good friend. Species is the yellowtail kingfish (Seriola lalandi) The anatomy highlights the biliary system (liver, gallbladder, bile ducts) that are the focus of his research.
