10/23 - Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986): the All-Time king of the series and my favorite Friday. This one walks the line between sincerely goofy and 4th-wall breaking humor. Add in the great Jason mayhem and some actual filmmaking prowess on display, it really works.
10/27: The Fog (1980): a minor John Carpenter hit, but that still puts it heads and shoulders over most genre films of the era. It feels like a campfire story put on film, and the great and eery synth score really adds to the effect. Plus, can't beat that cast

10/27: Halloween (1978): the original masterpiece, the proto-slasher, the one that started it all. It just gets better every time I watch it. The iconic score, the crisply framed shots, the ominous shadows, and the lurking killer. A classic of the era and the genre

10/28: The Cabin in the Woods (2012): one of my favorites. An exploration and deconstruction of both horror movies and why we watch them, it's a clever and funny time that's always a treat to watch

10/29: Apostle (2018): beautifully framed and delightfully violent, but it's missing something to be this generation's Wicker Man. The characters just aren't there, especially the bland main one. Also sags in the middle, like too many of the horror genre. Decent but not great

10/30: Hellraiser: Deader (2005): the series treks along, deep in that part where each movie was originally something totally unrelated to Hellraiser and they wedged the concept in, to varying results. In this case, another case of interesting ideas very poorly acted and conveyed

10/30: Leatherface (2017): a Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel is always unnecessary, and this one constantly asks us to sympathize with awful individuals, but at least it's otherwise fairly competently put together. Good amount of gore, but a weird structure still keeps it down

10/31: Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (2015): man, to think the original entry of this series once scared me so bad I couldn't sleep that night. This was so, so dull. And the overload of CGI showing us things just made it all that much less interesting

10/31: The Frighteners (1996): hey, that was a lot of fun! Great effects and exactly the sort of movie one would expect from vintage Peter Jackson mashed up with Robert Zemeckis. Michael J. Fox is terrific and the effects hold up super well. A great ride from start to finish

10/31: Jigsaw (2017): I used to be a hardcore fan of this series, and it's kinda weird seeing it with such a slick production. But, not a lot of goodness to find here. The centerpiece traps are nicely elaborate, which is good, but the morality is extra thin and the twist just bleh

10/31: Phantasm II (1988): the ethereal weirdness of the original is traded up for an action-packed road trip. Which doesn't always work out, but it keeps the campy attitude and has some excellent effects, so I wasn't all that disappointed

10/31: Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead (1994): good stuff here! Reggie's sexual attempts have aged *very* poorly, but beyond that this movie is the right blend of the first two. It's big, weird, campy, ambitious, and full of balls, so just the right mix for the second sequel

Hey hey, I did it! 53 movies down for the month. What a ride it has been. A lotta crap, plenty of classics, and I had fun with every single one in some way or another. Even as the season closes, lets all always remember to keep a little room for horror and spooks in our hearts
