Those who deride him as a dolt simply misunderstand what he is trying to do, and their derision further consolidates his anti-systemic pitch to his supporters. While we laugh at him, he laughs all the way to the electoral college. 2016 redux.

Indeed what seems to mark Trump out is precisely that he is not constrained by any vision of what he wants to achieve beyond re-election. Everything he does becomes intelligible and coherent in the light of satisfying his base.

Trump's actions show that what might appear as intergroup phenomena are often driven by intra-group concerns. Viewed as a solution to the middle-east conflict, his plan makes no sense. Viewed as a consolidation of his evangelical base, it is highly effective.

  4. You want benches - I'll give you benches. This is possibly the greatest bench documentary of all time (and the other videos here are pretty damn good as well)!

  5. Compare this with the Union Jack wrapped nationalism on show in Parliament Square at the weekend. And so remember, the next Scottish independence referendum won't pit nationalists against non-nationalists, but an inclusive Scottishness against toxic Britishness.

  6. There was also a third, personal lesson. To my shame I didn't stand up and support that brave man who was howled down. And I vowed that day I would always call out racism when I hear, no matter how awkward or difficult. Nothing, but nothing, is more important.

  7. Second, that the 'socialism of fools' is not just about equating jews with the capitalist oppressor but also about denying jews can be part of the oppressed. As a consequence we don't deserve solidarity in the face of even overt anti-semitism.

  8. And that taught me two important lessons. First, that anti-semitism is not just about the expression of hatred, but as much (if not more) about the indifference or deprioritising of such hatred when it does occur.

  9. Later, people crowded round the speaker to 'apologise' for the interruption. I doubt they would have thought themselves anti-semitic or would have uttered anti-jewish abuse. It's just that they didn't think the speaker's racism was important enough to warrant intervention.

  10. During the UK Miners Strike in 1984-5, I was at a Solidarity meeting in London. One of the speakers, a miner, referred to the Tory Chancellor of the Exchequer, Nigel Lawson, as 'another bloody Jew'. A man got up to protest. He was howled down by the audience.

  11. It is when you don't have to be a hater to hate, when murderous beliefs are taken for granted, when the innocent become perpetrators, that we really need to be scared. Be scared for India. Be very very scared.

First they attacked the Universities with words. Then they attacked the Universities with sticks Now they attack the Universities with bullets. What will it take before we call out the state sponsored violence in India and act in solidarity with our Indian colleagues?

This is the heart of modern far right strategy. Applying psychological pressure to bully people into ‘self-deporting’. Appears in Brevik’s patchwork ‘Manifesto’. Worth a read to get grip of what tactics /strategy is. Now being played from top to bottom. Hostile Environment Games.

As ever, harm comes from close to home, and racist stories of the dangerous stranger are designed to distract us from that basic fact.

The classic definition of an inclusive civic nationalism. It shows the critical importance of temporality in defining intergroup relations. A Nationhood rooted in the past is necessarily defensive and closed. One rooted in the future (where we’re going) is inclusive and hopeful.

I’ll state the obvious by reference to Matthew Hornsey’s work showing that only criticism by ingroup members is seen as legitimate. Nish mustn’t criticise Britishness because he is viewed as outgroup and that’s because ‘British’ is defined as white. Thus rather proving his point

I recall the Sinclair Cambridge arriving in 1972. It was in Boots, in a special glass display case. It had basic arithmetic functions, used reverse Polish notation and cost about £40, over £400 today. Oh yes, and the music had tunes you could hum to back then. God I feel old.
