So from what I can read, you decided to make this change because people are stupid and think being verified means they only make videos that are endorsed by someone/something? That seems strangely convoluted

Not exactly–the old way didn’t “verify” much except that a channel had 100k subs. This change makes verification more helpful, by looking at authenticity (you are who you say you are), and some additional criteria outlined here: https://yt.be/help/3QfB

The 100k sub requirement was only added in mid-2016 from what I hear. Before that, you could send an email via the site. Game Tech (a tiny Youtuber who’s verified) had an outdated video showing how.
