The opposite of involuntary celibacy is involuntary participation in sex. Yes, the decline of chattel marriage and the rise of female financial independence has led to some men going without sex.

But under systems of chattel marriage and female dependency, women had sex they didn’t want to have. Marital rape is sometimes simply a wife having sex because that’s a rule of marriage and she can’t leave the marriage.

Men have always felt entitled to sex and they achieved that by purchasing women. Chattel marriage was ownership. It could also be companionable but it was a form of ownership.

The notion of the love match or marriage decided by the participants for reasons other than transferring ownership of a woman from her father to her husband upended the idea that every man would be issued a woman.

The result is that women have more agency over their lives, including withholding sex. Men, on the other hand, feel they have lost that to which history has always said they were entitled: full access to sex.

But it seems to me that a system that led to women being coerced into sex in exchange for male protection - with no other option available - is a worse system then one in which some men can’t get laid.

So save me your “pity the poor incel” thinkpieces. Those men feel entitled to the use of another person’s vagina. That’s not ok.

No one would support a movement to entitle one group to use of another group’s kidney or lungs. So don’t say we should be figuring out how to give men access to vaginas without first getting the enthusiastic consent of the owner of the vagina.

Mutual enthusiastic consent is the threshold for all sexual activity. Period.

The notion of redistributing access to sex is basically a wonky want of saying “we need to start giving men chattel wives again!”. No. We do not.

We are all entitled to sexual drives. We are entitled to a sense of disappointment if we can’t sleep with our crush. But that’s where the entitlement ends. End rant.
