How, though? Seems even if it could be done it would constitute a “taking” and subject the government to lawsuits and liability. Would be cheaper and easier to simply give people the money to pay the rent.

Even if Congress passes legislation to this effect, it's already too late for many. Will they have the moral fortitude to make this retroactive to April? (Let me guess...they will do neither)

what we need to do is get the government to directly subsidize the People the way they've been directly subsidizing the corporations and the oligarchs. cancelling rent is very different from cancelling mortgages because one affects real people and the other affects banks.

That seems Sooo logical. I worked in banking. The interest that mtg. co's pay for their money at today's prime rate is miniscule. There should be payment abeyance all the way down from Fed Reserve to local banks — while putting a moratorium on evictions — until COVID is over.

Agreed but unless the US gets better control of the virus it could be a problem for a long time. Here in NZ we are aware that our situation will be difficult hold and still keep an economy of sorts.
