THREAD: Rep. Derek Kilmer joined with Republicans to sign a letter calling for Social Security cuts. He was the only Democrat in Washington State to do so.https://theintercept.com/2020/06/17/derek-kilmer-rebecca-parson-social-security/ …
The letter supports Mitt Romney’s TRUST Act, which calls for closed-door commissions that would create plans to cut programs like Social Security. These plans would be fast-tracked through Congress, bypassing regular order so that unpopular cuts receive less public attention.
This is why Social Security Works, a nationally respected Social Security nonprofit whose executive director did a town hall with me a couple months ago, called the TRUST Act “a plot to gut Social Security behind closed doors.”
Puget Sound Advocates for Retirement Action has also been fighting the TRUST Act. Social Security Works was so concerned about the letter Rep. Kilmer signed that they are planning to run billboards against one Democrat who signed the letter.
Local Social Security advocates were upset and criticized Kilmer strongly. With popular programs like Social Security, most politicians don’t come out and say upfront that they are trying to cut them.
They find workaround, more private ways to do it, like signing this letter while publicly praising Social Security. This gives them political cover. I’m not that kind of person, let alone politician. Social Security must be protected and expanded. Period.
If you can reach out to the 24% of voters who live off this program, you just might gut his chances at re-election. I hope they’ll understand.
