When politicians discuss slashing/increasing SS, does that mean slashing/increasing the SS tax taken from paychecks? Are SS benefits paid for exclusively by the SS tax, or subsidized by fed income taxes too? Is $ from SS tax used for other purposes than SS beneficiaries?

SS is paid for the same way *all* govt spending is, with money creation. There is 0 risk of SS ever being insolvent, choosing to defund SS would be a *political choice* not a fiscal necessity.
