One older, Latina woman opened the door and upon seeing the white lady standing there asked, “What happened?” I am very grateful when people of color take a chance and open the door when I knock.

Another woman said she gets $750 in SS and her rent is $650. I have been thinking a lot about how I’d make that work. She wanted my lit but didn’t want to open the screen door so I gave it to her through a tear in the screen.

Gary was delighted that I was the first politician who has ever come in person to his door. I know how he feels bc the only people who come to my door are sales people, missionaries, and the mail carrier.

As I canvassed the rest of the neighborhood, Gary sent people to me. He told me the names of a young neighbor couple who aren’t registered. “I know they’re old enough!! Get on them!!” The young couple told me they’d register & that they wish the streets would get fixed.

Last story: a woman answered the door & said, “I’m sorry, my brother just died. I can’t talk.” Her voice quavered & her face crumpled. She looked like she’d stopped sobbing to answer the door but could only hold it in for so long. I don’t have a brother, but I know how she feels.
