My rent has gone up 16% in the last few years. Twice the rate of inflation. I am one of the lucky ones, because I haven’t died on the streets as a result. I was one of the first candidates in the country to call for this and I’ll say it again: NATIONAL RENT CONTROL.

I lost big time. Bought mobile on a lot I rented and the rent on the lot kept going up every single year by quite a bit and I had to sell at a loss when I couldn't afford it anymore. A big loss because I had to sell fast to avoid losing it all for lack of ability to pay lot rent.

Rent control has actually backfired in the past because it reduced new construction. Much smarter to fight racist NIMBYs and fine any landlords who are sitting on empty units. That's how landlords manipulate the market. If you increase supply, competition will bring prices down

I'm with you on fining those holding onto vacants. But
#rentcontrol is definitely part of the solution. Landlords can squeeze every last penny out of tenants until they're forced to leave. Tenants should have the stability of knowing they can stay in their home & neighborhood. - Pokaż odpowiedzi

Rent control reduced apartment complex maintenance in Santa Monica. The good news was that it protected all of these awesome mid-century buildings on San Vicente Blvd. (if you care about that stuff). BAD news was landlords wouldn't so much as caulk a window or change a light bulb

I don't know much about this stuff but I think instead of rent control, which treats the symptom, we should go after the cause: the REITs and speculation and Wall Street/big investor influence over real estate. Maybe President Warren can figure that stuff out.
