Articles of Faith by James E. Talmage. It's a religious book, and politics and religion are inherently intertwined, so I'm going with it.

The analysis that truth, or evidence, acts for itself regardless of where it seems to come from was really big for me. Also the idea of applying belief and knowledge to action being the only way to validate whether it brings forth a positive impact.

Re: second point -- you mean that a good idea is only a good idea if it results in positive impact? I.e., doesn't stay in theory?

More that if you can't defend your position, it's either not worth having or you don't understand it well enough, or both. Taking the time to research and listen to see if your position helps people and is backed up is a way to discern which it is.
