It has white thready stuff hanging off the outside. Which one is that?

It sounds like you have a de-husked one, on the left in this picture. The one still in the large fibrous husk is shown in the cross-section on the lower right. Someone gave us an in-husk one when I was a kid, I'm convinced as a practical joke. We never got it open (few tools).pic.twitter.com/ez9YjPrpRf
