Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." This only applied to states that seceded from the US leaving slavery intact in border and Southern states under Northern control

I tweeted a question asking if I'm wrong for thinking TV channels like History or Smithsonian should broadcast documentaries because today in Juneteenth. I can't believe there isn't more recognition about today.

Agreed. This is a significant day, and needs far more recognition. I never learned about it in school. I learned about it as an adult when I visited John Brown’s Farm in upstate NY.

I’m not African American either. I think it’s vitally important that all Americans (I was born in the US) learn about this part of their history. We need to have a common understanding of the basis of the cultural and societal divide we’re seeing today. >
