The difference in methods and motives make sense, but the change in frequency seems odd. Is it because more male serial killers are being discovered thanks to DNA testing?

Since female serial killers more often kill for money they might have less motivation nowadays as society becomes more affluent?
-
Probably a bit of both.
-
Judging by above stats (and from what I've read) male serial killers tend to be driven by very primal impulses whereas female serial killers seem more callous and calculating, as police becomes more effective the latter is more likely to seek other methods to achieve their goal
-
Which is to say methods which does not entail directly killing someone, for the women killing was just a means to an end, male killers however get their gratification from the violence itself

I wonder if the person with a financial motive is similar to the others in terms of MO, signature and so on, or if it's just a brutal and incompetent robber. My guess is they are different creatures.
-
Oh yes, for them murder is just a means to an end, for serial killers driven by a sexual motive murder is the end by itself. Probably why we see fewer female serial killers today as police has gotten more effective and killing for money is not worth the risk anymore

Back then a lot of people lived in boarding houses and used to get bumped off by the landladies.
