Being honest, Australia didn’t need the people to defend her, its own faunae would kill any invader: white sharks, giant spiders, the most venomous vipers on Earth, etc.

More honestly, Japan never had the means to invade Australia due to stretched logistics chains. Their only hope of defeating Australia would have been a naval blockade and even then the IJN was stretched thin.

The Australian population and government had no idea that the Japanese didnt have the resources to launch a successful invasion. They feared that they did, and thats all that mattered. A population motivated by fear of invasion and subjugation can achieve great things.
