It probably is true that no dictatorship would allow the questioning of it's legitimacy in times of war, no less, but Britain wasn't a dictatorship. No matter how much Churchill wished otherwise

Good old Churchill. Authoritarian wannabe. One question though how did the no-confidence get to the floor of the House given the overwhelming majority of support in the vote?

It was actually a "motion of confidence", brought by the government (specifically by Deputy PM Atlee) to measure and preempt any opposition in the Commons.
