A German soldier in Kaunas watches a Lithuanian, the "death dealer", murder 50 Jews: "the next man stepped forward silently & was beaten to death with the wooden club... each blow accompanied by enthusiastic shouts from the audience."pic.twitter.com/sFjpfVAh7C
“He dragged out one man at a time from the group and struck him with the crowbar with one or more blows on the back of his head. Within three quarters of an hour he had beaten to death the entire group of forty-five to fifty people in this way.” ... from the account #sickening

Extreme heartlessness & cruelty. Never again must such a thing happen anywhere.
That actually makes me nauseous
also was not really better in any other part of Lithuania at the time – synagogues burnt, houses/shops destroyed, people basically hunted down
My great-grandparents grew up not far from Kovno (Jonava and Slabodka), and left shortly before 1904. Great-grandma told her kids that the neighbors (not the Nazis) murdered the Jews who stayed. Which is why I'm the only one in the family studying Eastern Europe.
She learned that from neighbors in Manhattan, who got letters from home. I don't think anyone in the family got messages out, and as far as I know that's all she said about it. Next to no one had survived - dozens, out of thousands in the shtetl.
