There are over 100 million gun owners with over 350 million unregistered guns in this country. If mass shootings were not a sign of mental illness, we’d *all* be shot by now.

Tens of thousands of us are each year. Mostly women by violent domestic partners. So common it rarely makes national news. But, by the same logic, we’d have all been shot by folks with MI now, too, since that number is 1 in 5.

Again, not all MI results in outward violence. Of the 33-35,000 gun deaths we have each year, 2/3 are suicides. I assume you believe the overwhelming majority of those suicides are related to mental-health issues, right? Why not assume similarly about the homicides?

We’re back to square one. Again, I argue the violence (even towards oneself) as a way to solve problems in our society is the issue at play, not MI. It appears we’re at an impasse. But with support of mental health parity and more research in MI & stigma, we’ll figure it out.

So, to be specific, do you *not* believe the overwhelming majority of suicides are a result of mental-health issues?

People “get busy” a lot once we get to this point. I asked you both direct questions that you knew answering honestly would bolster my point, so you left the conversation. That’s cognitive dissonance. It’s your biases revealed. And it’s too bad. Have a great day.
