Those studies you’re citing only include diagnosed mental illnesses. The issue is that diagnoses usually lead to help. We have a terrible mental-health infrastructure here and these shooters are *definitely* mentally ill. They’re usually undiagnosed.

I understand your thoughts. There’s got to be something “wrong” with folks who commit mass murder. But it’s not mental illness- undiagnosed or otherwise. It’s a toxic stew of anger and violence in our culture. That’s a much larger problem to tackle. In the meantime, #GunReformNOW

I’ve read the op ed. I’ve also read research & FBI data that show the opposite. Check out the research of folks like Corrigan, Appelbaum, Swanson, & Metzl. Folks with MI are 10 times more likely to be the victim of violent crime than general pop, 1/3 as likely to be perpetrators.

I know. Mass shootings are also very rare, with 330 million people here. Most mental illnesses are not outwardly violent, so citing statistics that include potentially outwardly violent mental illnesses with MI that are *not* majorly skews the results.

These stats are on serious mental illness, actually. There is no such thing as a “violent” mental illness. There is just not. Unless you want to categorize violence as a MI in and of itself, which the professionals do not.

When folks are in mental health crisis, they are unlikely to plan an attack like this. When we label folks expericing a mental health crisis as dangerous or criminal, we stigmatize them & prevent them from seeking help. We open the door to discrimination. #stopthestigma
