For the record, I support @Tim_Canova in his congressional run against the worst person on Earth. But I have to say that it bums me out that he’s being lauded for running as an independent when he clearly isn’t one. He’s a Democrat running as an independent as a *strategy*.
We need *actual* independents in government. I believe independents are the answer to this partisan problem. Democrats running as independents (there’s one in my race, too) and Republicans running as independents (there’s one of those in my race as well) aren’t the answer.
I’ve been an independent for almost 16 years. And if you’re going to talk to Republicans, Democrats, *and* Independents and 3rd-party voters, to build a political consensus, I believe it’s important to be an *actual* independent who doesn’t side with either party *at all*.
Bernie has *always* been an Independent (outside of presidential runs) and that’s where he gets his cred. And frankly I wish he’d run as an independent in 2020, because I believe he’d win and represent a tectonic shift in political discourse. But I digress.
Becoming an independent as a *strategy* doesn’t make you *actually* independent of party influence, dogma, or tactics.
We need *true* independents. People who saw through this partisan BS well *before* they considered running for office.
